New Covers for the Fever Series!

I was going to wait until I had the final versions of them all, but I just saw the new Darkfever online so decided to debut them now, here.

Darkfever and Dreamfever are in their final incarnations. Bloodfever and Faefever are still being refined, but are essentially as they are. I love them!!! After much debate: person or no person? Scene or element? Big with wide appeal and no real genre definition or genre with a touch of noir? we came up with a look that we felt spoke well for the series, is eye-catching, tactile, atmospheric. The black at the top and bottom will be matte, the shot in the middle between the smoky lines will be gloss, and the name and title embossed. We chose to go for a less flashy, no foil, no fancy embossing look. It was a tough decision because my publisher was willing to go all out, no worries about cost, but in a sea of increasingly bling-y covers, it was this look that really stood out.

It was critical to me that it be a well-matched set. I like my sets to match in my own library. I also felt it important that a reader be comfortable reading the books anywhere: a doctor's office, in front of the kids, on a plane, wherever. I wanted them to appropriately represent the story within, and be lushly visual, while a little stark, hence the monochromatic scenes. I was also adamant that the say Book 1,2,3,4 of the Fever Series, so a new reader wouldn't be rudely surprised to realize they'd begun in the middle.

Darkfever is the beginning of an eerie journey, (I love the cobbled stone she's standing on, inside the circle) Bloodfever is heading toward the cracked-earth Burren and the vampire Malluce, Faefever is the terrifying event in the church (I liked the white shift as a final loss of innocence) and Dreamfever is the madly skewed Hall of All Days, elusive and hard to manipulate.

Thanks to all of you for your input at the message board over the last few months! I appreciated the time you took to post your thoughts. I hope you love them as much as we do!

Love the color schemes, the continuity, the carry-thru from one to the next. It has a kinda gothic feel, yet not too much so to classify it - just to give them an air of mystery about what is going going on ... I'd probably pick it up to see what it's about. *wink* So, good job!!!

No sneaky peek at the Shadowfever cover??? LOL Someone was going to say it, may as well get it over with :)

I love the contrast of the scene from the black and that its on the spine as well as so often that's the part you see on the shelves. Will definitely be wanting them on my shelves :D

They look fantastic! I especially love Faefever's and Dreamfever's covers. The church and the hall of mirrors make them feel like she has a past she's having to fight against as well. Can't wait to see what Shadowfever's will look like! Thanks!

Love the covers, Karen. They really do embody the series a lot more than the current ones and they are visually striking. I can't wait to see the one for Shadowfever.

I *LOVE* the way the design wraps around the spine and onto the back.

Bet *you* thought I was gonna say... where's the Shadowfever cover, eh? LOL Gotcha!!!

Loooove the new covers. Very mysterious and fitting for the series. I still love the original Dreamfever cover best though, but it makes sense to keep them all within the same style. :) Gorgeous!

I love them, I'm getting goose bumps just looking at them! My favorite covers are of Darkfever and Dreamfever, they're all very well done, and I think they convey the right feel for the series.

They are beautiful and they really fit the series. I love them.

These are phenomenal!!! Now I'm going to have to re-purchase them all so I can have these versions too. :-)

I LOVE THESE!

I am so tempted to buy new copies of all the books so I will have the new covers! I really feel like these covers capture the series so much better than the original covers.

It is so exciting that this series has caught on so much and become so popular - Hopefully, it will help the movie adaptation go from option to producion.

:) Thanks for showing these! Very fun!

Thank you for the lack of heaving bosoms, etc. I am sick of non-readers judging my reading tastes on covers alone. How can I summarize this thick, lush storyline to some "Chicken Soup for the Soul" reader as they're sneering at my book? Now I won't need to bother with ***sigh!*** Shadowfever!

Love Love Love them...

I can tell you that I'm probably going to buy them ALL when Shadowfever comes out. I can see it happening...buying Shadowfever in hardcover the day it's released (so far away!!! :( ) and then buying the whole set again so they match lol

My favorite part of your post are always

"and now back to work on Shadowfever...:"

Haha, makes me feel all excited again when I hear you are working on it.

Ooh, pretty! Glad I waited to buy the series in PB. Now I won't have to buy it twice :o)

OH NO! My browser seems to be only displaying FOUR covers! ACK! Quick, Karen, can you re-do the link for #5 so I can see it?

*whistles innocently while checking to see if my oh so subtle (not) and totally shameless shenanigans worked*

Seriously, those covers are beautiful and well thought out, right down to Mac 1.0's blonde hair. I like the concentric cobblestones- they're like the ripples in a pond fanning out from the center; the drop being the start of Mac's quest/journey and all the events that continued out from there.

The last one looks like the Hall of Mirrors (in Versailles), but I'm pretty sure I know what it's supposed to be. I love them - AWESOME JOB!! :)

analisa said...

Stunning !!! Faefever gave me the chills ***shrugs*** Love the way they tie in together, it's a wonderful visual transition and they really take you to the core of each book.
So I better start saving now, cause I absolutely have to have it.

I absolutely ADORE the new covers! I might have to go buy a whole new set just to get this look (something I DO NOT do)! Fabulous!

I love them. They're fantastic. Can't wait to hold a copy of each, especially shadowfever!

You are so good to us! Love that you numbered the books; so thoughtful! Can't wait to hold them (all 5!) in my hands.

They are awesome. You guys did a fantastic job. Just looking at them makes me want to reread them this week, which I plan on doing. :-) Then buying them as soon as I see them. Thanks for the effort and for remembering to number them.

Lynne said...

They are all wonderful but I love Dreamfever! All those mirrors, perfect to describe what Mac is going through. . . so many questions and so few answers!

Wonderful, wonderful covers!

Elle said...

Absolutely love love the new covers! They are just perfect, from color to concept. Beautifully rendered, gothic tones, fits well with the story. Brava!

These are great I like darker covers even if Mac starts out pink =).

Sorry, but I would rather you continue the style of the original covers. They reveal the darker side of the book. All the bright colors in these new covers kinda just don't fit. Specially all the swirly designs.

AshleyinSC said...

Love them! And great choices. As the mother of a slew of kids from kindergarten to teen, I appreciate your ability to think about a book cover I can take anywhere. I also like having Book # of # on them. Bravo!

Sorry Karen, I like the old covers better. As someone who has read the books I like them, but I'm looking at it as someone who picks up the book and wants to know what the book is about, and for those people the cover just doesn't really give you much information. The old Darkfever gave up Dublin, all shiny and sinsister looking at night...it gave me a tingle the first time I picked it up. I especially loved Dreamfever with a burnt out Dublin below Mac all bada-ss looking in the tight leather. The outfits that Mac wears in the new bookcovers have no relation to Mac. Well, from what I see I'm in the minority...so what do I know LOL! You'll sell the books no matter what the covers!

Love the new covers, great atmosphere. But now I may have to have two sets, hardback and paperback...

The covers are beautiful, but I would like them better without the Mac chic in them

I'm just gonna put this out there and say what everyone else is thinking: "What? You're _not_ going to show us Shadowfever? *pouty face*" LOL.

They remind me of the "adult" Harry Potter book jackets. I'm tempted to get them just so I won't get weird stares while reading on the bus.

All I can say is, I know what I want to see on Shadowfever's cover... *eying a certain someone's tattoos*.

I can't wait to see SHADOWFEVER's cover.

"I was also adamant that the say Book 1,2,3,4 of the Fever Series, so a new reader wouldn't be rudely surprised to realize they'd begun in the middle."

Haha, yeah that's important. I was about 20-30 pages into Bloodfever before I thought, "Um...I'm missing something.." and had to go hunting for figure out wtf went wrong.

I still prefer the original covers though. I am a bit concerned - will the mass market of Dreamfever come out with the same cover as the hardcover? Otherwise my books won't match and I'm like you - I like all the books in my series to match. =P

Karen posted additional information about the new covers on her message board:

"The new cover looks are for paperback only, as far as I know. My publisher is planning to re-release them late summer, one month at a time, building up to Shadowfever in December.

Shadowfever is designed to match this new look, although it doesn't use the "smokebox" effect. When it comes out in paperback, it will. I'm afraid the only matched set that will be available, at least for a while, will be the series in paperback.

Getting the series packaged right has been a challenge. Obviously the original hardcover of Darkfever was all wrong and misleading. (I shared with you at my blog that it was originally intended for a romance.) The element of deception bothered me tremendously. Then the new look in paperback and subsequent hardcovers weren't right either. I got a lot of criticism about the "cheese" factor and increasingly graphic novel look. Personally, I couldn't stand the covers, except for Faefever. A book cover limits or entices and I felt the cityscape covers were becoming increasingly limiting.

In re the 'cracked earth' of Bloodfever, we went a little metaphorical rather than using a direct shot of the Burren in Ireland
(http://www.littleshamrocks.com/Cliffs-of-Moher.html) (Go to third picture down) to give a feeling of desolation and despair that Mac suffers in the grotto beneath the Burren. When we used the Burren, it somehow lost the haunting/haunted look we wanted.

We will be giving away a lot of free copies of the new books, so hold onto your $ and hang around to enter contests. The last thing I want to do is cost you more money. I'm SO glad you guys like them!!!"

Karen M Moning,
I just want to say I read a book from the Highlander series and thought it was cheesy rubbish.
The Fever series on the other hand was like a 180. I can't think of any author that caught me so polarized in their writing. I think it is really well done as a whole and you can feel the blood, sweat and tears in it. I am sad it has to end. BTW the covers look great, now maybe bookstores will take Fever out of the Romance section and give it wider exposure. It deserves it. Peace!...

@Leiha

Thanks for the info for those of us that don't go to the forums.

However:

"Shadowfever is designed to match this new look, although it doesn't use the "smokebox" effect. When it comes out in paperback, it will."

Aw man....that means all three books that I have now won't match it. And if Dreamfever doesn't come out with the same cover as it had with the hardcover (pleasepleasePLEASE tell me it will before these new ones hit) I'm going to be irritated. Personally, I did like all the old covers (they don't say "romance" to me at all) and now I'm worried that they're all going to get mixed up.

I'm like Karen - I hate mismatched books. And yet here we are... D:

Hang in there, enjoy your weekend, and know we are behind you!

I like the new covers don't get me wrong but, I've been following the series in paperback and this means I'll have the first 3 books with the old design and the last 2 with the new one. It's kind of irritating.. I also like my books to match and I don't understand the point of switching the cover art halfway through the first publishing of the series..

OMG love them!!!

No Shadowfever sneak peek :'(

I am very unhappy the way publishers are re-issuing old works as new. I have been sucked into buying old books, but now will NEVER buy a book without checking copyright dates. I liked the Highlander books, but am very miffed that it didn't specify that it was a re-issue.

julie said...

I liked the original Dreamfever cover a lot more. The new covers kind of portray Mac in the light of a helpless damsel in distress (which she definitely wouldn't want to be!). Especially the last two covers where she appears to be wearing a nightgown/slip. I like the first two new covers and last two original covers.

Love the covers, Karen! I also can't wait to see the cover for Shadowfever! I am a big fan of putting the book numbers somewhere in the series of books, too. Nothing like having a gazillion sticky notes to keep my books in order, LOL.

This was the best of the series. Everything was tied up with just enough at the end making you want for more. Kept me on the edge from beginning to end. What a creative writer.
